Famed singer, composer, and producer Mostafa Kamel has just succeeded Hany Shaker as the head of the Musicians Syndicate following elections held earlier today. A total number of 1,800 participated, with Kamel securing a lead of over 400 votes.
The elections follow the resignation of veteran Egyptian singer Hany Shaker last June, a personality who had proven deeply divisive over the years, especially with his sweeping ban of shaabi music and mahraganat.
Kamel is a music composer and producer who worked previously with Egyptian stars, including Amr Diab. The artist is best known for his eclectic and populist music portfolio, including hit song 'Eshta Yaba'.
