History of Skateboarding in Egypt Exhibit Rolls Up to Downtown Cairo
The audiovisual event by Amulet Skateshop narrates the much-maligned history of skating in the country, stretching back decades.
Amulet Skateshop is hosting an exhibition chronicling the history of skateboarding in Egypt on April 27th at The Factory in Downtown Cairo, in partnership with Rad Collectives. Organised by founders Hani Talat and Yehia O., the exhibition is the first of its kind in Egypt, covering decades of skating heritage in a country that has often seemed hostile to the sport. Amulet’s founders have organised the event to bring together the often erratic Egyptian skate scene, aiming to push past ‘skateboarding politics’ to shine a light on the fast-growing sport and its surrounding subculture. With over 40 years of combined experience in the scene between Talat and Yehia, and partnerships forged by Rad with global brands synonymous with skating worldwide - such as Monster and Carhartt WIP - the event encourages the next generations of skaters to pursue their passion. In collaborating with global brands, the event also seeks to solidify Egypt’s place on the global skate map - maybe now people will stop asking, “You guys have skateboarding in Egypt?!” Since its inception, Amulet Skateshop has aimed to bring the world’s best skating brands to Egypt’s eager skating community, who for years had to deal with low quality knock-off products. This free exhibition will also be a chance for Amulet to make some important (and as yet mysterious) announcements, so for all skaters and skateboarding enthusiasts, this is one not to miss. As well as the public opening on April 27th, there is also an invite-only private opening on the 26th from 6 PM to 10 PM. The exhibition itself will run from 2 PM to 10 PM.
