Film preservation projects across the region have been saving these classic Egyptian films from oblivion.

With a rich history of Egyptian cinema spanning decades, countless stories face the risk of vanishing due to the loss of film stocks, and the negatives that house them. Yet recently, archivists, historians and filmmakers across the region have been working to save Egypt’s unique cinematic legacy.
Film restoration and preservation projects have been helping digitize and preserve Egyptian productions, allowing a wider audience to revisit definitive stories of our past.
From the late renowned filmmaker Youssef Chahine’s extensive filmography including ‘El Ard’ (1970) and ‘El Youm El Sades’ (1986), filmmaker Shady Abdelsalam’s ‘The Mummy’ (1969) to a recording of the iconic stage comedy ‘Madraset El Moshaghbeen’ (1971), we’ve compiled a list of Egyptian productions before and after restoration.
