'Photographing Distance' Opens at Red Sea Museum in Historic Jeddah

The Red Sea Museum in Historic Jeddah has opened Photographing Distance, an exhibition by Argentine artist Matilde Marín exploring lighthouses through photography and video installations. The exhibition opened on October 9th and marks its first presentation in Saudi Arabia, running until December 31st.

Based on Marín’s Pharus project, which she began in 2005, the exhibition documents lighthouses across several locations around the world, including Jeddah and Yanbu. The works examine their role in maritime navigation as well as their connections to memory, distance and people’s relationship with place.

The opening programme included a guided tour led by Marín, a discussion session and a musical performance. During the exhibition’s run, the museum will also host film screenings, poetry evenings, creative photography workshops and family activities including lighthouse model-making.

Operated under the Museums Commission, the Red Sea Museum is presenting the exhibition within the context of the region’s maritime heritage while bringing an international contemporary art project to Historic Jeddah.
