Karnak Chat Pilot Introduces Egyptian-Built Arabic AI Assistant

A pilot of Karnak Chat has introduced an Egyptian-developed conversational AI system built on the Karnak large language model, with a focus on Arabic language capabilities and local deployment.

The model was developed by Egyptian experts at the Applied Innovation Center, an affiliate of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, by enhancing existing open-source models and training them on a curated body of data and documents published across Egypt and the Arab world.

Karnak is designed to understand and generate both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian colloquial Arabic, while taking Egyptian and wider Arab cultural context into account. The system is also intended to draw on verified and reliable information when producing responses.

Beyond the chatbot itself, the project is intended to serve as a foundation for generative AI applications developed for different sectors in Egypt and the wider Arab world.

A central part of the project is digital sovereignty. Karnak’s software, along with applications built on the model, can be deployed securely within local data centres where required, giving organisations greater control over the infrastructure and data used by their AI systems.

The approach is intended to reduce reliance on externally hosted AI infrastructure while giving developers and organisations a locally developed base for building applications suited to Arabic-speaking users and regional requirements.

The pilot also reflects a broader push to develop domestic AI capabilities through the Applied Innovation Center, which has previously been tasked with developing systems for sectors including agriculture, healthcare and education as part of Egypt’s national AI strategy.
