Construction to Begin on Egypt’s Second Nuclear Reactor
The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority has recently approved the license for Egypt’s second nuclear reactor.
Nuclear energy has been part of Egypt’s development projects since 2015, when the governments of Egypt and Russia signed a partnership to establish the first nuclear power plant in El Dabaa, Marsa Matrouh 320 kilometers northwest of Cairo.
Now, the construction of El Dabaa 2 - Egypt’s second nuclear reactor - will soon begin after the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) approved its license. After extensive research performed by the ENRRA, the license will officially be issued on November 19th, Egypt’s Nuclear Energy Day.
Following the construction of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, which is built and supplied by Russia's nuclear power company Rosatom, the second reactor is set to bring Egypt closer to providing 9% of electricity in Egypt through nuclear energy. The nuclear power plant is set to generate 4,800 megawatts by 2030.
