Dubai Plans ‘Trackless Trams’ in Eight Locations Across Emirate
This cutting-edge design enables a faster, more flexible installation and a reduction in costs.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on a comprehensive study to bring autonomous, eco-friendly electric ‘trackless trams’ to eight locations across the emirate.
The trackless trams, powered by electricity, will operate on virtual tracks that rely on camera-guided painted lines rather than traditional rails. This cutting-edge design enables a faster, more flexible installation and a reduction in costs while maintaining Dubai's commitment to sustainable transportation. Each tram unit will consist of three interconnected carriages, capable of carrying 300 passengers and reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h.
The new trams are part of the broader Dh16-billion Main Roads Development Plan for 2024-2027, which includes 22 major projects aimed at elevating service quality and efficiency for Dubai’s 2.2 million daily transit users.
In addition to autonomous trams, the RTA's 2025 and 2026 initiatives include expanding dedicated bus and taxi lanes, adding six new routes to enhance public transit efficiency, reduce travel times by 41%, and improve bus arrival rates by 42%.
