Egypt Cracks Down on Poaching Migratory Birds in Red Sea

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important stops for migratory birds, with more than 350 species including falcons, eagles and vultures passing through Egypt annually. To protect these birds, the Ministry of Environment organized a large-scale inspection campaign in the Red Sea to crack down on the illegal hunting of migratory birds.

After the General Administration of Red Sea Reserves reported a number of bird hunters in the North Ras Ghareb area, the Ministry of Environment formed a committee of environmental researchers to survey the area and take action against violations of national and international environmental laws. Legal measures have been taken against violators, with a report submitted to the Prosecution’s Office.

The campaign resulted in the removal of six poaching camps that were hunting falcons, where they found a handful of Lanner falcons, a kestrel and two endangered Sooty falcons.
