Egypt Saves USD 23.6M Monthly by Cutting Fuel Consumption
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced recent savings, with plans to prioritise renewable energy.
Egypt has achieved significant fuel savings, reducing consumption by 6.04% and saving EGP 1.2 billion (USD 23.6 million) monthly, according to Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat. This was accomplished by lowering fuel usage from 182 grams per kilowatt-hour to 171 g/kWh, aided by collaboration with the private sector.
The government is prioritising renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, implementing efficiency measures such as network and lighting upgrades, energy-saving devices, and incentives for private sector participation. A long-term strategy aims to increase renewable energy's share in the national energy mix to 42% by 2030 and 60% by 2040. Local manufacturing is being promoted to produce competitive renewable energy equipment for global markets.
Efforts to decrease traditional fuel use are designed to alleviate pressure on foreign currency reserves and lower carbon emissions. The El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is a cornerstone project, expected to enhance energy security and meet growing electricity demand.
The national grid is undergoing a transformation into a smart grid with remote monitoring and control systems to improve stability. Egypt has established electricity interconnections with Jordan, Sudan, Libya and Saudi Arabia, and is planning additional links to Italy and Greece to position itself as an energy hub between Africa and Europe.
