Egypt to Establish Pollution Monitoring Platform Using Satellites

In order to cultivate a more sustainable future for Egyptian agriculture, the Ministry of Environment is cooperating with the Egyptian Space Agency to establish an electronic platform housing all images and data generated by satellites daily. The satellites will be coupled with early warning systems to track wind directions, which will be critical for preventing fires, examining soil and monitoring agricultural pollution incidents such as the burning of residues and waste like rice straws.

The Ministry of Environment has set out to inform farmers about the dangers of emissions created from the burning of agricultural waste to their health and to the environment, and to encourage farmers to recycle the waste as fertilizers or animal feed. Inspection teams have been sent across Egypt in cooperation with the Industrial Development Authority to find, report and resolve these incidents.
