Heritage Commission Launches Project to Excavate Ancient Riyadh

The Saudi Heritage Commission has unveiled the Al-Yamamah Archaeological Project, which will enable the exploration and excavation of Riyadh and adjacent areas, like Wadi Hanifah, Dhurma, Al-Hani and Al-Masane.

The project will run from 2024 to 2028, and aims to enrich the national archaeological record and uncover the ancient history of the land, in collaboration with historians, academics, local students and international institutions.

The commission plans to make use of modern technology to enhance the excavation process, employing geographic information systems, ground-penetrating radar, 3D modelling, magnetic surveying, low-altitude aerial photography and artificial mapping intelligence.

There are currently 1,812 registered cultural heritage sites in the Kingdom, documented in the National Register of Urban Heritage, as well as 1,514 on the National Antiquities Register, and 425 sites recognised for historically significant rock art or inscription.
