Israel PM Netanyahu Confirms Ceasefire Deal with Hezbollah
Shortly after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement, Israel launched a strike on central Beirut.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced his government’s decision to approve a US-brokered ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah after nearly 14 months of attacks on Lebanon. Shortly after the announcement, Israel launched a strike on central Beirut, marking its most significant attack on the Lebanese capital since the war began.
The agreement will now move to Israel’s full cabinet, where approval is expected to be a formality. Lebanon's Foreign Minister has already expressed support for the arrangement.
According to the terms, both Israel and Hezbollah will withdraw their forces from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days. Hezbollah will remain north of the Litani River, a demarcation set during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. This withdrawal includes fighters and weaponry from areas south of the river.
The exact start date for the ceasefire and additional details remain unclear. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would rigorously enforce the agreement, warning of a strong response to any violations.
“We will enforce the agreement and respond forcefully to any violation. We will continue united until victory,” Netanyahu declared.
He also framed the ceasefire as an opportunity to redirect Israel’s focus on intensifying its campaign against Hamas in Gaza and countering "the Iranian threat."
“With Hezbollah out of the picture, Hamas is left alone in the fight. Our pressure on it will intensify,” Netanyahu stated.
Israel’s targeted attacks on Lebanon resulted in over 3,800 fatalities, nearly 16,000 injuries, and one million residents displaced.
