Riyadh Metro to Open First Phase in Coming Weeks
This extensive metro system will feature 85 stations along a 176-kilometre network, with a total investment of USD 22.5 billion.
The first phase of the Riyadh Electric Train Project (Riyadh Metro) is set to launch in the coming weeks, initially accommodating 1.2 million passengers daily, with an eventual capacity of approximately 3.6 million. This extensive metro system will feature 85 stations along a 176-kilometre network, with a total investment of USD 22.5 billion.
Part of the broader King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, which includes both rail and bus services, the metro will incorporate six main lines, each designed to serve densely populated areas as well as key government, commercial, educational and healthcare centres. The system is designed for driverless electric trains, operating at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Additionally, the metro will connect vital locations, including King Khalid International Airport, the King Abdullah Financial District, major universities, downtown and the Public Transport Center.
According to the Riyadh Development Authority, the project is projected to generate annual revenues of SAR 43 billion, create over 7,000 jobs and significantly reduce car trips by approximately 250,000 per day. This reduction is expected to save around 400,000 litres of fuel daily and contribute to lower air pollution emissions.
