Second Phase of Universal Health Insurance System Launches in Egypt
The latest phase of the programme will cover an additional six governorates.
The Ministry of Health and Population announced the launch of the second phase of the nationwide Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS), which will cover an additional six governorates. Per presidential directives, Egypt now aims to complete the UHIS by 2027 instead of the original 2032 target.
Phase one delivered over 31 million services to citizens in covered areas, with 21,000 training programs for medical teams and 157 accredited health facilities. Other milestones include increased digitization across units and 85% hospital inclusion across the regions included in the first phase of the program.
As Egypt scales its healthcare reform, the system's annual cost is projected to reach EGP 210 billion to serve the population.
