Suez Canal Revenues Up 17.5% in October as Traffic Increases

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) reported improved navigation indicators in recent weeks, with October revenues up 17.5% year-on-year. The authority noted higher ship transits and net tonnage, reflecting calmer regional conditions.

According to SCA Chairman Osama Rabie, net tonnage increased by 16.3% in October, while 229 ships returned to transit through the canal, “the highest monthly figure since the onset of the regional crisis”. Between July and October 2025, the canal recorded 4,405 transits carrying 185 million tons, compared to 4,332 ships and 167.6 million tons in the same period of 2024.

Rabie said the recent recovery was linked to easing tensions following the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit and developments in Gaza. Earlier, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi estimated Egypt’s losses from Red Sea disruptions over the past two years at around USD 9 billion.

The SCA added that development projects have enhanced navigational safety in the canal’s southern sector by 28%. The southern duplication project, launched in February, has expanded capacity by 6–8 ships per day.

The canal remains the shortest maritime route between Asia and Europe, saving around 30 days compared to the Cape of Good Hope route.
