UAE Schools Tighten Enforcement of Mobile Phone Ban
UAE schools will confiscate mobile phones for up to a month as enforcement of campus bans is stepped up.
School administrations across the UAE have stepped up enforcement of a long-standing ban on mobile phones on campus, warning parents that students found carrying devices will face extended confiscation periods.
In notices sent to parents via text messages and WhatsApp circulars, schools confirmed that any mobile phone brought onto school premises will be confiscated for a full month. Repeat violations may result in the device being withheld until the end of the academic year.
The measures are being implemented in line with Ministerial Decision No. 851 of 2018 on student behaviour, which prohibits students from bringing mobile phones to school. Administrations clarified that tablets, including iPads, remain permitted only for educational use and strictly with a teacher’s request or approval. Using tablets during breaks, before classes or after lessons will be considered a breach of school regulations.
School officials said the renewed enforcement aims to improve discipline and learning outcomes. Educators noted that excessive phone use has been linked to reduced concentration and weaker comprehension, particularly in subjects that require sustained focus such as mathematics. Limiting access to personal devices, they said, helps students engage more effectively in lessons and follow classroom instruction.
Parents were urged to cooperate with schools by ensuring children do not bring mobile phones to campus and by reinforcing school rules at home.
