Yellow River Water Treatment Plant Gets EUR 6.15 Million Financing
The financing is the result of an agreement between Egypt, the French Development Agency and the European Union.
The Ministry of International Cooperation and the French Development Agency (FDA) has signed a EUR 50 million developmental financing agreement and a EUR 1.5 million grant to enhance wastewater treatment capabilities for Cairo's swelling population through the development of the Yellow River Water Treatment Plant project. The ministry has also signed a EUR 10 million grant agreement with the European Union towards this end, bringing the total amount to EUR 61.5 million.
The third phase of the project will provide wastewater collection and treatment services, and is expected to serve 17.5 million people by 2040. It may become one of the largest water treatment plants in Africa and the Middle East upon completion.
The treated water will be used for agricultural irrigation, while the treatment sludge will be converted into biogas, a renewable energy source that will power up to 80% of the plant's electricity needs.
