Katara Village by Zaha Hadid Architects Unveiled in Northern Syria
Zaha Hadid Architects partners with the Qatari Education Above All foundation to provide shelter and education in Syria.
Nominated for the prestigious AJ100 Collaboration of the Year 2023, the Qatar-based Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and Zaha Hadid Architects jointly inaugurated the 'Katara Village' in northern Syria, providing displaced families with sustainable shelter and educational facilities.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), the project was brought to life through EAA's collaboration with the Qatar Red Crescent Society in Qabasin, northeast of Al-Bab in northern Syria.
The village is located in an area where the majority of internally displaced Syrians have sought shelter since the beginning of the Syrian war in 2011, amidst more than 12 million displaced Syrians across the region, according to United Nations figures.
The Katara Village features 30 innovative tents designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid. These fire-resistant structures provide protection in different weather conditions and serve as decent transitional housing for the increasing number of displaced people. Prioritising durability and portability, they are resilient against adverse weather and can be easily dismantled and reassembled as needed.

The village provides educational, health, and shelter facilities, offering a modern learning environment tailored for displaced children. It includes four meticulously designed school units within a 175-square metre facility. This space supports traditional learning and serves as a flexible hub for educational activities and community engagement. Equipped with essential resources and designed to foster a safe and stimulating atmosphere, the classrooms symbolise resilience and highlight the transformative impact of education in rebuilding lives.
The EAA and Zaha Hadid Architects partnered in 2015 to establish similar structures across the region, including locations in Yemen, Pakistan, and Turkey.
