One of Frank Gehry’s Final Cultural Landmarks Takes Shape in Abu Dhabi

Scheduled to open in 2030, the design for Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi by Frank Gehry has been revealed, marking the latest addition to Saadiyat Island’s growing constellation of cultural landmarks.

Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the project is among the final cultural works conceived by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect. Envisioned as a living expression of music and performance, its billowing, fabric-like exterior cascades over the heart of the site, while a transparent façade opens the institution to the public, making artistic production visible beyond the stage.

Designed as a home for opera, ballet, theatre, orchestral concerts and contemporary live performance, Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will join the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - also designed by Gehry - and Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat Island.

Translating to “House of the Arts,” the institution will host everything from large-scale productions and touring performances to artist residencies and experimental works. Operating year-round with 365 days of programming, it adds a dedicated performing arts venue to a district better known for its museums.

The project arrives as Abu Dhabi continues to expand its performing arts ecosystem, building on initiatives such as Berklee Abu Dhabi, Bait Al Oud and its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music.
