Sayyida Zeinab Mosque Unveiled After Restoration
The mosque has undergone restoration to its façade as well as interior shrines, halls, and architectural decorations.
Sayyida Zeinab Mosque has been reopened to the public following extensive restoration, which began in 2022. Sitting at the heart of Cairo’s Sayyida Zeinab neighbourhood, the mosque has received restoration to its external façade, as well as interior shrines and halls, in addition to the intricate architectural decorations that adorn the place of worship.
Named in honour of Al Sayyida Zeinab bint Ali, daughter of Imam Ali, the fourth Caliph, the history of the mosque remains somewhat of a mystery, though most estimates suggest that it was first built in 1154 CE, before being rebuilt in 1874. This latest restoration prepares one of the city’s most important mosques for Eid Al Fitr after the holy month of Ramadan.
