Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to Reimagine Pyramids Sound & Light Show

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the world-renowned design firm, has been commissioned by OSL for Entertainment Project, an Orascom Investment Holding Company, to reimagine The Sound and Light Show, a popular visitor experience at the Giza Pyramids, along with Cairo-based practice Raafat Miller Consulting.

Offering a sensory portal into ancient Egypt, The Sound and Light Show has been an intrinsic part of the tourist experience at the Giza Pyramids. Colourful projections would resonate into the plateau’s landscape, lighting up the iconic structures while a booming voiceover narrates legends on how they were built.

“To implement this project, the expertise of the largest international and local design firms will be used to obtain state-of-the-art designs that befit this magnificent location and its unique, ancient history,” Naguib Sawiris, CEO of Orascom Investment Holding Company, tells #SceneHome. The revamp is poised to provide the iconic show with a technological upgrade that ensures a more distinctive mark is left in the memory of its visitors.

“Visiting Giza is a rare, transformative experience that offers a glimpse into centuries of human history,” Chris Cooper, SOM’s Design Partner, says. “In reimagining the experience, our priority is to honour and preserve its history and create a sustainable future for the UNESCO World Heritage site.”

SOM will develop the concept, the design and the project’s masterplan, which also features new ticketing booths and expanded parking lots. Existing facilities will get a world-class transformation, featuring an overhauled programme that puts environmental and preservation measures at its core.

With the Grand Egyptian Museum’s upcoming opening in November and the steady increase of culinary experiences surrounding the Pyramids, the timing is right for this upgrade to help The Sound and Light Show put its vibrant spotlights on the Great Pyramids of Giza.
