A national rabies control campaign has vaccinated 23,604 free-roaming dogs since January 2026, alongside 1,932 sterilisations recorded up to April 20th, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.

By the end of February 2026, only 12,665 dogs had been vaccinated, meaning the rate of vaccination has since increased.

The campaign is being implemented through the General Organisation for Veterinary Services in cooperation with civil society organisations, with authorities applying vaccination and sterilisation measures to address both disease transmission and population growth.

Officials said the approach is based on scientific and humane methods aimed at reducing the spread of rabies while managing free-roaming dog populations without lethal intervention.

The programme is positioned as part of efforts to balance public health priorities with animal welfare standards.
