24/7 Hajj Testing Operations Activated by SFDA Laboratories

Laboratories operated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority are running around the clock during the Hajj season as part of expanded monitoring and rapid testing operations aimed at maintaining food safety and public health standards for pilgrims.

According to the authority, the laboratories receive and analyse samples submitted by field inspection teams, conduct urgent testing, and support epidemiological investigations linked to suspected food poisoning cases.

Current operational figures released by the authority show that laboratories processed 857 samples and completed 1,856 tests across 465 requests during the season.

Officials said a new “Fast Track Mechanism” has been introduced to allow samples to be received, sorted, and analysed within one hour of arrival to support immediate preventive action during emergencies.

The system uses advanced laboratory technologies including genomic analysis systems for identifying pathogens and tracing infection sources, Polymerase Chain Reaction devices for rapid microbial detection, and ELISA systems designed to identify toxins and foodborne pathogens.

Beyond emergency testing, the authority said laboratories are also conducting specialised research and safety evaluations on ready-made meals served to pilgrims in coordination with other entities.

The authority added that all laboratory operations are conducted according to high biosafety and quality standards, with data analysis and operational coordination supporting decision-making throughout the Hajj season.
