39 New Cities Have Been Developed in Egypt Over the Past Decade

Officials from the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities highlighted the development of 39 new cities over the past decade during Capital Forum 2026, describing the programme as a key part of Egypt's long-term urban expansion strategy.

Speaking at the forum, Deputy Minister of Housing for New Urban Communities Walid Abbas described the New Capital as an investment-led development model that has strengthened the country's position in smart urban development.

Abbas said investment in the new cities extends beyond real estate to include digital infrastructure, job creation and efforts to attract domestic and foreign direct investment, while expanding opportunities for private sector participation. He added that the programme is supported by smart infrastructure and a national road network designed to improve connectivity, enhance quality of life and promote sustainable economic growth.

In a separate address delivered on behalf of Administrative Capital for Urban Development Chairperson Khaled Abbas, General Manager Ahmed Fahmy said cooperation between government entities and the private sector has been central to delivering development projects.

According to Fahmy, the New Capital is entering a new phase, 10 years after its launch, focused on strengthening its competitiveness, attracting further investment and reinforcing its position as a regional hub for business, finance and innovation. He added that the city is also well positioned to export Egyptian expertise in the development and management of modern cities.

Organised by Al Ahram in partnership with Impact under the patronage of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Capital Forum 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the New Administrative Capital. The event is intended to showcase progress in the project while encouraging discussions on smart and sustainable cities, digital transformation, innovative financing mechanisms and the private sector's role in future urban development.
