American Hospital Dubai Introduces New Sleep Apnoea Surgery
The new treatment offers an alternative for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea through implant-based therapy.
American Hospital Dubai has introduced a new surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea, performing its first Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (HNS) procedure in Dubai.
The therapy, also known as Upper Airway Stimulation, targets a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep due to airway obstruction. The procedure works by sending signals to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls tongue movement, prompting it to move forward and keep the airway open.
The implant is placed under general anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. The device can then be activated before sleep using a handheld remote.
The procedure adds to the hospital’s existing sleep medicine services, which cover diagnosis and treatment of a range of sleep disorders, including insomnia, narcolepsy and movement-related conditions.
