Cairo Airport Ranked as Busiest in Africa in September 2026
The airport recorded 1.79 million scheduled seats, up 11.2% from September 2025, according to OAG data.
Cairo International Airport ranked as Africa’s busiest airport by scheduled seat capacity in September 2026, recording 1.79 million seats, according to data from aviation analytics provider OAG cited by the Egyptian cabinet’s media centre.
The figure represents an 11.2% increase from September 2025. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport ranked second with 1.19 million seats, followed by Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport with 1.16 million.
Other major airports included Mohammed V International Airport with 0.73 million seats, Cape Town International Airport with 0.59 million and Houari Boumediene International Airport with 0.58 million.
OAG also ranked Egypt as Africa’s largest country market by scheduled airline capacity during September, with 3.1 million seats, up 13.4% year on year.
South Africa followed with 2.4 million seats, while Morocco recorded 2.1 million, Ethiopia 1.4 million, Nigeria 1.2 million and Algeria 1.1 million.
Kenya and Tunisia each recorded 0.8 million seats, followed by Tanzania with 0.7 million and Ghana with 0.3 million.
EgyptAir and Air Cairo were also placed among the 10 airlines with the largest scheduled seat capacity in Africa during the month. EgyptAir ranked third with 890,773 seats, up 6.7% from a year earlier, while Air Cairo ranked ninth with 360,502 seats, an increase of 14.9%.
The cabinet’s media centre also cited International Air Transport Association projections indicating that passenger traffic in Egypt could grow by between 3.4% and 3.8% annually from 2024 to 2050, compared with a projected global rate of 3.1%.
