Cairo Reports No Injuries or Fatalities After Morning Earthquake
Residents across several governorates described shaking that lasted around 30 seconds, with some leaving their homes, according to local media reports.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber has confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been recorded across the governorate following the earthquake that struck in the early hours of the morning.
According to the governorate, emergency response teams have been placed on high alert. Authorities said they are continuing to follow developments closely, while no damage resulting in casualties has been reported so far.
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck northwest of Suez in the early hours of Monday, shaking Greater Cairo and nearby governorates, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
The quake hit at 3:00 AM Cairo time at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with an epicentre 29 kilometres northwest of the city of Suez, around 100 kilometres east of Cairo. EMSC said there was no tsunami risk. Shallow earthquakes are typically felt more strongly at the surface.
