Coral Beach Resort Sharjah Converts Food Waste to Irrigation Water
The system is the first of its kind at a hotel in Sharjah and supports the emirate's food waste reduction efforts.
Coral Beach Resort Sharjah has become the first hotel in Sharjah to operate an on-site biodigester that converts organic kitchen waste into greywater for landscape irrigation, reducing food waste sent to landfill while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
The biodigester uses natural microorganisms and oxygen to break down food waste into nutrient-rich greywater, which is then used to irrigate the resort's gardens and green spaces. According to the resort, the system creates a closed-loop approach to water and waste management while reducing methane emissions from decomposing food waste and cutting the carbon footprint associated with transporting waste off site.
The initiative forms part of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority's Food Waste Carbon Pilot Implementation, which aims to reduce food waste and lessen the environmental impact of hospitality operations across the emirate.
The biodigester is one of several sustainability initiatives introduced by the resort, which also operates the Northern Emirates' first on-site water bottling plant to eliminate single-use plastic bottles, maintains the Coralganic organic garden, and has implemented energy and water conservation measures alongside broader waste reduction programmes. The property received the Sustain Sharjah Award at the Sharjah International Travel & Tourism Forum Awards 2025, presented by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority.
