EGP 60 Million Sanitary Landfill Enters Service in Dabaa

A new sanitary landfill has entered service in Dabaa, Matrouh Governorate, following its final handover under Egypt's national programme to expand environmentally safe waste management infrastructure.

The Ministry of Local Development and Environment said the facility was built at a cost of EGP 60 million and covers 10 feddans. According to the ministry, the project supports the government's efforts to improve municipal solid waste management while enhancing environmental services and public cleanliness across the country's governorates.

The landfill was constructed in line with approved environmental and technical standards and includes a sanitary disposal cell, a protected pond for collecting and evaporating leachate—the liquid produced as water passes through waste—as well as internal roads, an administrative building, a security office and electricity generators. Water and fuel storage tanks, a vehicle tyre-washing unit and an integrated lighting system have also been installed to support day-to-day operations.

The Dabaa facility joins a growing network of waste management projects across Matrouh Governorate, including a sanitary landfill in Marsa Matrouh built at a cost of EGP 35 million, a mobile waste transfer station valued at EGP 9 million, and a sanitary landfill in Barani, which has received its initial handover following investments of EGP 65 million.

According to the ministry, waste management projects across the governorate now represent total investments of approximately EGP 169 million. The Dabaa landfill was implemented through a cooperation agreement involving the ministries responsible for local development, environment, and planning and economic development, alongside the Arab Organization for Industrialization.
