Egypt Backs BRICS Declaration Urging UN Security Council Reform

BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration on September 12th, calling for reform of the United Nations Security Council, greater use of local currencies in trade between member states and stronger representation for the Global South in international institutions.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the consensus adoption of the declaration at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, with Egypt participating as a member of the bloc.

The declaration condemned “unilateral acts of war” and stressed the importance of protecting sailors and maintaining the security of commercial navigation amid continuing military operations in the Middle East.

It also called for broader participation by developing countries in shaping emerging technologies and the rules governing them, while encouraging BRICS members to deepen trade cooperation and reduce barriers within the bloc.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi told the summit that Egypt places particular importance on safeguarding the stability and freedom of international navigation, while also supporting reform of the international financial architecture.

President El-Sisi also backed efforts to consolidate the New Development Bank’s 2027–2031 strategy and highlighted progress in cooperation on agriculture and water.

He said Egypt is working to develop a grain and logistics hub to support food security, while calling for easier access to climate finance for developing countries.

President El-Sisi added that Egypt is ready to support joint BRICS projects and use its location to strengthen links between Africa, Europe and Asia.

He also said Egypt looks forward to the bloc’s upcoming Chinese presidency and to assuming the BRICS presidency itself in the near future.
