The Industry Ministry is advancing plans to localise electric vehicle manufacturing, with a target of producing up to 100,000 vehicles annually by 2032 while expanding domestic component production and reducing reliance on imports.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reviewed the automotive localisation plan with Industry Minister Khaled Hashem and Assistant Minister for Strategic Affairs Mohamed Sami. The programme prioritises electric vehicles as part of a wider push to strengthen local manufacturing, lower the import bill and expand export opportunities.

Hashem said a major international automaker plans to begin producing three electric vehicle models in Egypt in 2027, with annual output targeted to reach 100,000 units by 2032. Local component content is expected to rise from an initial 10% to 27% over the same period.

Current localisation projects include an agreement between an international company, El Araby Group and the Arab Organization for Industrialization to manufacture seven metal automotive components with a combined annual capacity of 8 million pieces. The ministry is also working on local battery supply, electric motor manufacturing and specialised training for mould and die production.

China’s Dongfeng has already begun producing electric vehicles through a partnership with SN Automotive and state-owned El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, using El Nasr’s production lines.

The ministry is also coordinating with international companies on charging stations and supporting infrastructure, while reviewing the National Automotive Industry Development Programme and studying additional incentives for local EV production.
