First Corneal Retrieval After Cardiac Death Completed in Riyadh

The Kingdom’s first corneal retrieval from a deceased donor following cardiac death has been completed in Riyadh, marking the first outcome of a new national pilot initiative.

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation coordinated the procedure with the organ donation unit at King Saud Medical City. The retrieved corneas were then transferred to the Eye Bank at King Abdulaziz Medical City for evaluation, processing and preservation ahead of transplantation.

The procedure follows the launch of a pilot initiative on August 10th, 2026, involving the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, King Saud Medical City and King Abdulaziz Medical City.

The initiative is intended to expand opportunities for corneal donation, increase the availability of donor tissue and support patients who require corneal transplants to restore sight.

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation said the process is being carried out under approved medical protocols and quality standards, with continued coordination between participating hospitals and the Eye Bank.
