Health Ministry Denies Reports of Epidemic in Luxor
Health officials said reported illnesses in Esna are seasonal viral infections, with most patients recovering at home.
The Ministry of Health and Population has denied the presence of a mysterious or epidemic virus in Esna, Luxor, saying reported illnesses are seasonal viral infections that recur at this time of year.
The Luxor Health Directorate began monitoring clusters of high fever reported in villages across Esna, with common symptoms including high temperature and body aches. Health officials said most cases have been mild and can be managed at home with rest and fluids, while patients who required hospital care have since recovered.
An Environment Ministry source said the illness is not transmitted through drinking water, food or personal contact. Health authorities have meanwhile intensified campaigns targeting insects and rodents in coordination with the Preventive Medicine sector, alongside continued surveillance in affected areas.
Infection control teams have also conducted training for new staff on isolation procedures and monitoring healthcare-associated infections as part of efforts to standardise response measures across facilities.
Residents have been advised to reduce exposure to insects, remove stagnant water and keep water containers covered, particularly around children and older people. The ministry also advised against taking antibiotics for viral infections and urged anyone with persistent fever or stomach pain to seek medical care.
