Hospitals to Handle Sick Leave Approvals in the UAE

Licensed hospitals and clinics across the UAE can submit and process sick leave attestation on behalf of patients through the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s electronic system, under an enhanced version of the service.

Sick leaves lasting five days or less are eligible for immediate attestation, while cases exceeding five days or requiring further review are referred to a Medical Committee, which is expected to issue a decision within five working days.

Applications must be filed by health facilities holding a valid Ministry of Health and Prevention licence, with individuals unable to apply directly. Treating physicians and dentists must also hold active professional licences.

For inpatients, multiple companions can be included in one application, provided each companion’s leave matches the patient’s attested duration. Companion leave is limited to parents, spouses, children and siblings. Passport copies are required for non-resident patients and companions visiting the UAE.

Health facilities are responsible for ensuring medical and personal information is complete and accurate. For sick leaves exceeding five days, any additional information requested by the Medical Committee must be submitted within 30 days to prevent the application from expiring.

Sick leaves and medical reports already attested by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Health, Sharjah Health Authority or Emirates Health Services do not require further attestation.
