Khayamiya Market to Undergo EGP 100 Million Restoration

Khayamiya Market in central Cairo will undergo restoration works costing more than EGP 100 million, with the eight-month project expected to be completed in May 2027.

The restoration is being funded jointly by Aga Khan Cultural Services Egypt and the ALIPH Foundation, in cooperation with Cairo Governorate and the Ministries of Antiquities and Endowments.

Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber said the project will focus on preserving the market’s architectural and historical character while maintaining its role as a centre for traditional handicrafts.

The works are also intended to support the market’s cultural and economic activity. According to Saber, coordination has taken place with traders and shop owners so businesses can remain open while restoration is underway.
