Second Phase of Cairo BRT Begins Public Operations

Public operations began on September 26th for the second phase of Egypt’s Bus Rapid Transit project, extending the network from Ain Sokhna Road station to Sun Capital. The new section connects with the first phase at the Ring Road–Alexandria Agricultural Road intersection, creating a continuous corridor of around 75 kilometres across Greater Cairo.

Phase two spans approximately 40 kilometres and adds 16 stations serving areas including Maadi, Mokattam, Al Jazair, Al Imamain, Al Zahraa, Al Bahr Al A’zam, Omraniya, Talbiya and Maryoutiya. Fares are distance-based, starting at EGP 5 for journeys of one to four stations and reaching EGP 35 for trips covering 27 to 30 stations. Air-conditioned buses operate on fixed schedules along the corridor.

Sun Capital station, at the intersection of the Ring Road and Fayoum Road, covers 80,000 square metres and is intended as a major interchange for commuters using Fayoum Desert Road and nearby areas. The BRT network also connects with other transport systems through interchange points such as Adly Mansour Station, which links to Metro Line III and the Light Rail Transit.

Access to stations is provided through pedestrian bridges, tunnels and elevators. The system forms part of efforts to regulate movement along the Ring Road by replacing informal microbus stops and direct pedestrian crossings with organised transport and designated access points.
