Tadwein & Restore FGM Offer Free Surgery for FGM Survivors
The initiative is offering free surgery to a number of FGM survivors. Registration is now open.
A new initiative by Tadwein for Gender Studies and Restore FGM is offering free reconstructive surgery to a number of female genital mutilation (FGM) survivors in Egypt, helping address some of the long-term physical effects of a practice that has been outlawed in the country since 2008.
The procedures will be carried out by Cairo-based Restore FGM, which describes itself as the first clinic in Egypt and the Middle East to provide this specialised form of surgery. The initiative is being led in partnership with Tadwein for Gender Studies, an NGO founded in 2016 that focuses on gender equality and women's rights. Both organisations have long worked on raising awareness about FGM and providing psychological support to survivors.
This latest effort expands that work into medical treatment and rehabilitation, offering survivors access to reconstructive procedures free of charge. Those interested in registering can contact Tadwein through Instagram.
