Goubi & GAZZZZ Balance Groove and Tension on Rap Single ‘BALTO GELD’
Goubi links with GAZZZZ for 'BALTO GDEED', an experimental rap track full of stark basslines and instrumental mischief.
Following up his latest collaboration ‘El Af3a’ with Venice-based Egyptian producer 5amaseen and fellow alt-rapper JO6A, Goubi continues his journey through the labyrinth of experimental rap, this time teaming up with Cairo-based duo GAZZZZ (who themselves have been on a prolific spate of genre-bending releases) to find a striking balance on ‘BALTO GDEED’.
Foundationally, the track is built around a heavy, pulsing synth bassline and an abrasive, filtered drum break, providing a stark bedrock for Goubi to push his delivery to the limits. The first verse opens with a low-key, restrained energy, embellished by washed-out ad-libs and subtle vocal textures. But as Goubi steps into a more intense register, GAZZZZ begin to tear into the instrumental, throwing in ringing, dissonant piano chords and experimental effects processing that build up to an abrupt, high-energy chorus sprinkled with tongue-in-cheek sound effects.
The second leg of the track introduces yet another switch-up. Shimmering synth chords take over to steer the production into more lush territory, sharply contrasted against gritty drum textures and Goubi’s relentless bars. Through a well-balanced mix of sharp rap flows, driving percussion, and a sense of instrumental mischief, ‘BALTO GDEED’ delivers a refreshingly eccentric listening experience in the regional underground.
