Lebanese Artist Gio MKL Drops Anti-Situationship Anthem ‘What I Do’
The 19-year-old TikTok sensation returns with a new alt-pop track mapping the emotional toll of being in a complex relationship.
Lebanese singer-songwriter Gio MKL - who became a TikTok sensation in late March 2023 with over 1.3 million followers - returns with a new alt-pop single ‘What I Do’.
Produced by Tanner Katich and Danny Hajj, the track exudes that allure of rock energy, fusing heavily distorted guitar arrangements with infectious basslines and drum patterns. Gio’s delicate and soulful vocals outline the disheartening realities of desiring someone who is “not that into you.”
Through all-too-relatable emotive lyrics, the 19-year-old artist maps out the complex emotional toll of being in a situationship with someone he actually has genuine feelings for. He calls out the offending party for being heartless and leading him on with mixed signals, and declares that this kind of ‘relationship’ is not something would like to do. The upbeat tempo and unconventional production style of the track are very catchy and just stick in your head on a loop a while after hearing it.
Gio was introduced to music at the tender age of four, when he used to accompany his father, who was an artist himself, to his live performances. Growing up in a musically-inclined household, he was heavily influenced by Lebanese icons like Ziad Rahbani, alongside modern-day global pop icons like Billie Eilish, XXXtentaction, The Weekend, Michael Jackson and Nirvana.
In October 2023, he launched his solo music career with a debut single, ‘Sick Of Your Love’. His most recent track, ‘On My Door’, which was released earlier in February 2024, currently stands at 1.5 million streams across all online streaming platforms.
‘What I Do’ marks the third single of Gio’s forthcoming full-length album, which is set to be released at the end of 2024.
