Saudi Fencer Wins Kingdom's First World Championships Medal

Saudi fencer Khalifa Al-Omairi has secured the Kingdom's first-ever medal at the Fencing World Championships, reaching the semi-finals of the men's épée event in Hong Kong.

Al-Omairi guaranteed a podium finish after defeating Japan's Koki Kano, the reigning world champion and world No. 1, by 15-12 in the quarter-finals. The victory ensured Saudi Arabia's first medal at the championships, regardless of the outcome of his semi-final bout.

His run to the last four included a series of victories over higher-ranked opponents. Al-Omairi opened the knockout stages with a 15-14 win over Luxembourg's Flavio Giannotte, before edging South Korea's Chang Hyo-min 8-7. He then defeated Italy's world No. 8 Simone Mencarelli 15-10 to book his place in the quarter-finals.
