'Housing for All Egyptians' Initiative to Make 25,000 Green Buildings

Marking a new milestone in its pursuit of a more environmentally friendly future, Egypt is establishing a green housing project in the Capital Gardens City. Part of the presidential initiative ‘Housing for All Egyptians’, these experimental units will be constructed to test the implementation of environmentally friendly features such as rooftop solar panels, green building materials like white mortar instead of cement, and a greywater system.

Capital Gardens City is part of a string of fourth-generation smart cities currently being built across the country. These new cities are designed to reduce air pollution and protect the environment with the Green Pyramid Rating System, which sets the global standard for environmentally friendly infrastructure. These buildings are made to have a sustainable structure system that requires minimal maintenance, be constructed of natural materials, rely on natural ventilation and light, and blend in with their surrounding environment with minimal impact.

The Social Housing and Real Estate Finance Support Fund is cooperating with the World Bank and the National Center for Housing and Building Research to ensure the proper implementation of this green architecture. The support fund aims to build 25,000 green housing units by the end of 2023 across five new cities, namely New Aswan, New Minya, October Gardens, New Sohag and Capital Gardens City.
