Arabic Musical Film ‘Sugar’ is Taking Us to a Sweet New World of Magic

The world of the heartwarming fable is, without a doubt, essential to both growing youngins and adults in search of comfort. Something about these lands of wonder plays a lullaby in our hearts - and now ‘Sugar’, a new musical film series about the adventures of young heroine Sukkar, will take Arabic audiences down the rabbit hole into a whimsical world of their own.

The first movie is coming out this October 12th, and is loosely based on the novel ‘Daddy Long Legs’ by Jean Webster. Similarly to the novel, the film follows a number of children as they navigate the gloom of the orphanage they share.

Every day, the children wake up with the hope of bringing more colour into their world, while being constantly at odds with what the evil orphanage head, Ratiba, has in mind. Starring some of the most prominent child actors of our generation, like Yasmine ElAbd, Hala Turk, Moataz Hesham, the movie also features special appearances from Mohamed Tharwat and Ahmed Saad.

Written by Kuwaiti writer Heba Mishari Hamada, who created the entirety of the music for the movie, and directed by Egyptian director Tamer Mahdy, the movie’s dialogue is entirely in formal Arabic. Its set is totally custom built, from the orphanage to the sewers (we’re as curious about how they managed that as you are). Even all the interiors are meticulously crafted for the purpose of the film.

‘Sugar; will be available for streaming on MBC’s premium streaming service Shahid.
