North Sinai Named Capital of Culture 2026

North Sinai has been named Egypt’s Capital of Culture for 2026, following approval for the city of Arish to host the 37th Egypt Writers Conference in December. According to the Ministry of Culture, the designation aligns with its wider strategy to decentralise cultural activity and expand arts and literary programming beyond major urban centres. Selecting Arish as the host city for the Egypt Writers Conference was framed as recognition of its historical and cultural significance, as well as its contribution to Egypt’s literary and intellectual life. Cultural programming under the Capital of Culture title will extend across multiple cities in North Sinai throughout 2026. Planned activities include initiatives spanning the arts, literature, and heritage, alongside dedicated programmes for children and young people. The ministry said the approach is intended to support sustained cultural engagement in the governorate rather than limit activity to a single event. The Ministry of Culture confirmed it will provide full institutional support for the Egypt Writers Conference and work in coordination with the North Sinai governorate to ensure both the conference and the wider 2026 programme reflect Arish’s cultural heritage and reinforce its position within Egypt’s national cultural landscape.
