Omani Students Create AI Glasses to Aid Deaf & Mute Communication

A group of students in Oman has developed an AI-powered device aimed at supporting communication for individuals who are deaf or mute. The innovation, created by the student-led startup Sirius, integrates artificial intelligence with wearable technology to help users engage more fully with the world around them.

The device, named Language, features a pair of smart glasses that convert sound into readable text, and then into speech, enabling smoother communication between users and those around them.

Alongside the glasses, the system includes a smartwatch and a digital application designed to assist users in overcoming literacy challenges. The additional tools help broaden the device’s impact, allowing users to interact with a wider segment of society.

Development of the device was informed by an in-depth study of the lived experiences of individuals with hearing and speech impairments. The Sirius team incorporated extensive community feedback throughout the trial stages, using insights from real users to refine and enhance the final product.

The project recently received international recognition, earning a silver medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions held in April.
