African Space Agency Inaugurates Headquarters in Cairo
The African Union's leading space agency is now based in Space City, setting the stage for satellite-based solutions.

The African Space Agency (AfSA) officially opened its headquarters in Cairo’s Space City. The agency, developed under the African Union, is expected to coordinate space efforts across the continent from this new central hub.
The launch event brought together Egyptian officials and representatives from African and foreign space agencies. A design competition for African youth decided AfSA’s logo, with the winning entry submitted by a Cameroonian designer using African Union colours.
AfSA is responsible for programs using satellite data to address challenges such as crop monitoring, rainfall measurement, disease tracking, and coastal erosion. Its operations will also include water resource management, ecosystem tracking, and disaster response.
The African Union formally established the agency in 2019, and Egypt was selected to host it following a continental bid. Egypt has committed USD 20 million to support AfSA’s infrastructure and operations. Among its standout initiatives are the African Space Training Program, which has trained 71 engineers and scientists, and the African Development Satellite project.
