Ancient Temple to Egyptian Goddess Isis Found in Upper Egypt

An Egyptian archeological mission has unearthed a towering structure that has been identified as a temple for ancient Egyptian goddess Isis in Sohag, dating back to the Ptolemaic era.

The temple was found alongside 85 tombs from around the same time period. Within these tombs, the archaeologists found mummies accompanied with 30 pieces of identification written in ancient Greek.

These inscriptions recorded the names of the dead, their parents’ names, where they lived, the jobs that they held in life and the age when they died, along with ancient Egyptian prayers for the dead. These are presumed to be burial permits.

The archaeologists also discovered remains of animal bones, as well as a basin which could provide some insight into the purification habits of ancient Egyptians.

Pieces of the temple of Isis had previously been discovered in the early 2000s. Sohag is a huge historical area when it comes to Egyptian history and these discoveries just scratch the surface of what may be hidden there.
