Egypt Expands Water Cooperation With African Nations

According to a recent meeting convened by Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, Egypt is intensifying its efforts to support water management and climate change adaptation across the Nile Basin and other African nations.

Since taking over the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) presidency in 2023, Egypt’s approach has revolved around projects designed to improve water infrastructure and enhance sustainable water resource management across the region. These projects include the installation of solar-powered groundwater wells, the construction of underground reservoirs, flood forecasting centres, water quality monitoring, and river port development.

Yet, Egypt’s support extends beyond infrastructure, focusing on capacity building and knowledge exchange. Through various collaborative efforts, 1,650 professionals from 52 African nations have benefited from technical studies, training programs, and applied research on integrated water resource management.

Finally, through the AWARe initiative, which aims to support developing countries in Africa with practical projects on climate adaptation in the water sector, Egypt aims to drive global awareness on the intersection of water and climate change. Through the initiative, training programs and capacity-building efforts at the Pan African Center for Water and Climate Adaptation (PACWA) are empowering water specialists to tackle water-related challenges more effectively.
