Egypt’s Targets for Solar & Wind Energy Raised to 18,550 MW by 2030
The Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority has set renewable energy goals with solar and wind projects.
The Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority has announced a plan to expand its renewable energy capacity, targeting the addition of 18,550 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy by 2030. The initiative aligns with the country’s broader strategy to enhance sustainable energy production and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels, with most projects spearheaded by private sector entities.
Wind energy projects form the backbone of these efforts, with plans to establish power plants capable of generating 12,750 MW. These projects will be located in areas where wind speeds average seven metres per second, providing favorable conditions for energy generation.
Solar energy projects are also central to the strategy, with a targeted capacity of 5,800 MW. The New and Renewable Energy Authority is contributing to these efforts with plans to develop solar cells with a smaller capacity of 20 MW. Solar power plants have already demonstrated strong efficiency, achieving an average performance rate of 80%.
Egypt’s renewable energy sector has seen consistent growth. During the 2024/2025 fiscal year, hydroelectric power production reached approximately 4,563 gigawatt-hours (GWh), a 3% increase compared to the previous year. Wind energy projects produced 1,605 GWh, while solar cell-connected grids delivered 1,337.18 GWh, marking a 6% rise. Additionally, solar thermal power plants generated 208 GWh during the same period.
