Egypt to Receive First Velaro High-Speed Electric Train in August 2025
The Ain Sokhna–Alamein–Marsa Matrouh line marks the first phase of Egypt’s 2,000-kilometre high-speed rail network.

Egypt is set to receive its first Velaro high-speed electric train in August 2025, as part of the national high-speed rail network currently under construction. The announcement came during a site inspection by Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, who reviewed progress along the Ain Sokhna–Alamein–Marsa Matrouh corridor.
The route is part of the network’s first phase, which will eventually span 2,000 kilometres, connecting major economic and agricultural zones across the country. The system will be supported by 60 stations, two main depots, and five maintenance hubs. Once operational, the rail network will include 41 Velaro high-speed trains manufactured by Siemens Mobility, along with 94 regional trains and 41 freight locomotives, forming an integrated transport system to improve connectivity and cargo logistics.
The Velaro trains, developed by Siemens, are among the world’s fastest and most efficient high-speed rail models, and their deployment in Egypt represents a major advancement in the country’s transportation modernisation strategy. The new rail network is designed to support passenger travel, industrial development, and freight transport, linking critical areas such as the New Delta, Mostakbal Misr, Ganat Misr, West Minya, Toshka, and East Oweinat. By facilitating movement between the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts, the railway aims to function as a strategic logistics corridor that enhances national and regional trade capacity.
