Giant Statue of Thutmose II at Karnak Temple Has Been Restored

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the total restoration of Thutmose II’s statue at Luxor’s Karnak Temple.

Standing at 10.5 metres and made entirely out of quartzite, the monument is considered to be one of the largest Pharaonic statues in Egypt.

Having begun their restoration project in August 2021, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ all-Egyptian team addressed the damage in the statue’s torso, which had become completely dislocated. Through mechanical and chemical cleaning, the team managed to bring the statue back to its original form, reversing years of cracks and decay.

Following international restoration standards, the Thutmose II statue is ready to welcome visitors in its full glory; a throwback to the Pharaoh's reign in 1479 BC.
